Prevailing winds

India’s renewable energy targets are ambitious, with a headline-grabbing goal to install 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, which currently stands at around 262 gigawatts, approximately half that goal.

Achieving this task requires organizations that buy into the vision and have the requisite operational excellence, as well as a fierce determination. Luckily, under the stewardship of Country Manager and Director Govind Bhagwatikar, major renewable energy player SANY Wind Energy India is ready for the challenge.

SANY Wind Energy India is the Indian subsidiary of SANY Renewable Energy Beijing China, part of SANY Group. It has identified India’s green energy transition as one of the most enticing opportunities for sustainable growth globally.

“India’s renewable energy ambitions are among the most exciting globally,” he says. “SANY is fully committed to playing a transformative role, and these ambitious clean energy targets offer immense growth potential.”

With its vision to become India’s leading wind energy innovator and turbine manufacturer, Bhagwatikar sees huge potential not only in India but also across the rest of the Indian subcontinent.

Especially important, Bhagwatikar explains, is working harmoniously with the Indian government toward a shared objective to increase the nation’s self-sufficiency.

“Our advanced manufacturing footprint in India, aligned with the government’s ‘Make in India’ vision, allows us to deliver cost-effective and timely solutions, accelerating wind power deployment across the country,” he says.

“Customization is key – our strategic team adapts turbine designs specifically for local wind regimes, ensuring maximum efficiency, reliability and grid compatibility.”

This close collaboration with the government and key independent power producer customers in India and its ability to adapt to local conditions promise to yield impressive results for SANY, and Bhagwatikar envisages its footprint only increasing.

“Over the next decade, we aim to significantly scale our market share, becoming one of the top wind turbine manufacturers supporting India’s 500-gigawatt non-fossil energy target,” he says.

Turbo innovation

Although Bhagwatikar is a passionate advocate of wind energy, he acknowledges that it is just one facet in the wider movement toward renewables, which requires a variety of technologies to be adopted.

“Innovation isn’t just about building turbines; it’s about smarter operation,” he says. “As India’s energy landscape evolves, hybrid renewable solutions combining wind, solar and storage will be essential.”

With the need for ongoing innovation so crucial, SANY plans to invest further in its research and development capabilities to further accelerate progress.

“We plan to expand local manufacturing and R&D for India-specific requirements, innovate next-gen turbine technologies tailored for Indian conditions and integrate digital tools for smarter, more efficient operations,” he says.

This will build on the progress it has already made in these areas, with its wind turbines already tailored to the varying geographic demands of India’s vast landmass.

“Our advanced four-megawatt wind turbine is specifically engineered for India’s diverse wind conditions – ranging from high-wind coastal zones to low-wind, turbulence-prone inland sites,” he says.

These turbines feature robust structures, advanced aerofoil blades and variable pitch controls to maximize energy capture and reliability.

“We’ve also incorporated corrosion-resistant materials for harsh environments,” he adds. “We blend our global tech expertise with local engineering know-how to build turbines that really work for India’s low-to-medium wind speeds.”

As well as its advancement in hardware, it’s also investing in software to stay ahead of the competition.

“SANY Renewable Energy is at the forefront of digital innovation in wind energy. We have developed an intelligent wind farm operating system that integrates advanced control technologies with cutting-edge digitalization, intelligent sensors and predictive analytics,” Bhagwatikar says.

“This system enhances the power-generating capacity of our turbines through intelligent control, ensuring optimized performance and reduced maintenance costs.”

Key relationships

Central to SANY’s mission to accelerate the renewable energy transition is nurturing strategic relationships that ensure maximum impact and produce mutually beneficial outcomes.

“Collaboration is at the heart of our strategy,” Bhagwatikar says. “We’re building strong local partnerships with major independent power producers, while leveraging SANY’s global R&D and execution strengths to differentiate from both local and international competitors.”

One such partner is CuBuilt Engineers, providing trusted welding solutions. Yet Bhagwatikar stresses that partnerships, however cordial, are ultimately measured by just one metric – the degree to which they further sustainable development in India.
