For most people, the fields of aviation and architecture have little in common. But for Richelle Singson Michael, principal architect of RS Michael Architecture and CEO of Platinum Skies Aviation, the two have some striking similarities.
“Architecture requires an artistry that can be built on rigid frameworks and creativity despite the limitations of physics,” she explains. “I have trained myself within these technical frameworks of architecture.
“Aviation is similar. It is a highly technical practice, especially in terms of maintenance and safety, yet you need to be flexible and keep in mind the service you are providing to end users.”
For Michael, the appeal of aviation has another aspect: the technology allows ideas to take flight.
“I have long been passionate about aviation,” she says. “Its rich history of technology encourages aspirants like me to challenge the field, commit to the highest quality and make aircraft accessible for the many.”
“Taking people across the Philippines is a rewarding endeavor we are ever grateful for.”
The fact that Platinum Skies offers such a variety of professions is something Michael finds inspiring, too.
“Not only that, but thanks to our aircraft, taking people across the Philippines is a rewarding endeavor we are ever grateful for,” she notes.
The company’s unique fleet is key to succeeding in this highly competitive space. Its Dornier 328 aircraft are ideally suited for short runways and quick turnarounds, which allow the company to take its customers to destinations that are out of reach for larger airplanes.
“We also cater to a niche market with our 30-seater aircraft,” Michael reveals. “Often, the aircraft available in the industry are either small VIP jets taking eight-to-12 passengers or large 100-passenger aircraft. Platinum Skies fills this gap for customers.”
Sustainability is also a key area where customers are demanding action, which Michael and her team are keen to deliver.
“We’ve implemented and continue to improve on fuel-efficient technologies and practices such as optimizing flight routes and reducing weight on flights,” she says.
Platinum Skies has moved away from single-use plastics and now chooses to source materials and products from suppliers with environmentally responsible business practices. The company also takes its CSR obligations seriously.
“We’ve long partnered with several organizations in conducting outreach and education,” Michael adds.
“I was taught to build my own name and establish my own legacy.”
It’s all part of building and maintaining the integrity of Platinum Skies’ brand. Michael explains that some of the best business advice she ever received was from her father, who told her to focus on consistency and credibility.
“I’ve always lived by my dad’s teachings. I was taught to build my own name and establish my own legacy,” she reveals. “Excellence is not how you start off but how you persevere amid challenges and tough times.”
The recent impact on the aviation and travel industries due to the COVID-19 pandemic was certainly a test of this philosophy. But Michael says that her company – and the industry overall – has come through with an understanding of how to continue to serve their customers while looking after everyone’s health.
“The pandemic made safety a top priority for passengers,” she affirms. “Post-pandemic, we continue the practice of seeing where we can adapt to the current times, with one area being embracing digital transformation.
“Platinum Skies has leveraged digital channels for quality control.”
“Excellence is not how you start off but how you persevere amid challenges and tough times.”
This transformation not only streamlines their passengers’ experience, it also allows the company to maintain operational excellence. Michael adds that this comes down to leading by example in practical, day-to-day behaviors.
“We have fostered a culture of excellence in Platinum Skies. We’ve promoted a strong work ethic, a commitment to quality and a focus on continuous improvement,” she says with pride.
“We have long invested in training and development for our employees, building them into leaders in their own right.”
As CEO, Michael is the first to recognize and reward these leadership qualities. She advises upcoming leaders to believe in themselves and embrace challenges.
“I would emphasize the importance of leading with integrity, transparency and respect,” she adds. “By demonstrating ethical behavior and building trust with our stakeholders, we can build a strong and sustainable business that delivers value for everyone involved.”
