In the world of African technology, Nigeria isn’t following trends; it’s playing a central role in shaping the future of AI innovation.

Thanks in no small part to leaders like Olatomiwa Williams, outgoing General Manager at Microsoft Nigeria, the technology ecosystem in the country is embracing cutting-edge tools while upskilling citizens and ensuring responsible innovation.

For Williams, no AI strategy is complete without human capital development.

“The future of Nigeria’s digital economy depends on talent that we cultivate today,” she explains.

“Microsoft is committed to preparing tomorrow’s workforce by investing in digital skills and education, and this means that we continue to strengthen our partnerships to ensure Nigerians have access to the right skills, tools and resources required to thrive in the AI era.”

“Ultimately, our mission in Nigeria is to harness the power of AI.”

Using her almost 15 years of experience at Microsoft, where she has worked across different functions, including technology-focused roles and partner management, Williams quickly reacted to the AI revolution and helped put innovative solutions like Copilot into the hands of customers.

“This transformation is really exciting,” she enthuses. “We’re able to leapfrog in terms of bringing our Copilot solution to life, which integrates across our product portfolio to ensure that we are providing our customers with access to AI tools within these products that they know and love.”

Customer-centric approach

Under the three pillars of connectivity; investing in AI scaling and innovation; and driving more people to participate in the digital economy, Williams and her team at Microsoft are putting AI democratization at the forefront.

While providing access to AI tools and solutions to people across the world is at the heart of the mission of Microsoft, it’s especially relevant in the Nigerian environment. In practice, Microsoft is working on a number of initiatives that bring AI tools to individuals, startups and public institutions, regardless of geography or size.

“We are providing easy access to the use of our platform and providing robust developer tools and localized solutions that lower the barrier to entry by supporting local developers and entrepreneurs,” Williams adds.

“Working with Microsoft has been a journey of shared vision and commitment to digital transformation. The team brings not just global technology but a deep understanding of the local ecosystem. Together, we’ve been able to co-create solutions that are not only innovative, but also relevant to the African business landscape.” – Collins Onuegbu, Chairman, Signal Alliance Technology Holding

Microsoft isn’t just providing customers with cloud and AI solutions to implement on their own; the technology firm is supporting partners to build solutions tailored to address local challenges.

From agriculture and education to healthcare, Microsoft is ensuring that AI technologies are not just reserved for a privileged few, but become tools for creativity, productivity and growth throughout the country.

Through workshops and hackathons, talent in Nigeria and across the region is being empowered to learn how to make the most of the latest innovations in AI.

Core partnerships

Creating powerful products and enterprise solutions that have the ability to transform businesses is the hallmark of Microsoft. However, Williams is acutely aware that cutting-edge technology needs an equally advanced stakeholder ecosystem to secure a future that works for all Nigerians.

“We thrive on building strategic partnerships with our solution partners, government stakeholders and our customers,” she explains.

Building skills for the next generation

In a bid to bridge the gap between education and employment for young Nigerians, Microsoft offers a certification program as part of its scaling initiatives, alongside mentorship opportunities.

“We strongly believe that by empowering youth and professionals with relevant skills, we will not only swell individual career growth, but we’ll also bring national innovation and competitiveness,” Williams says.

This is a cause Williams also deeply values, with this passion leading her to create Uzemi Africa, a nonprofit organization that champions efforts to support female tech leaders and help them access mentorship and training opportunities.

It takes diligence, engagement and time to contribute positively to the partnership, with all strategic relationships being built on a basis of mutual collaboration and innovation.

“It’s like a continuous cycle that helps us to gain more momentum,” she says.

Longtime collaborator Signal Alliance Technology Holding (SATH) is one of these essential businesses that assist customers in using Microsoft products to drive adoption and maximize ROI on Microsoft 365 Copilot. As a result of the strength of the partnership, SATH was recognized as the 2023 Microsoft Partner of the Year for Nigeria.

Extensive collaboration with government and academic stakeholders is crucial for Microsoft, as Williams wants to leverage technology to innovate and drive transformation across the board in the country.

“We partner with policymakers in Nigeria to share best practices and also co-create in terms of how we continue to innovate on the policy side,” she points out.

Leading Microsoft partner in Nigeria, Gems Consulting Company, is focused on enterprise resource planning and, through the partnership, is playing a key role in driving conversations on AI adoption and enterprise transformation.

Trusted ecosystem

In Nigeria, where trust in digital technology is still developing, it is crucial that Microsoft leads by example, Williams explains. By working closely with regulatory bodies such as the National Information Technology Development Agency and National Data Protection Commission, the tech giant is sharing global best practices on responsible AI governance and learning from regulators about what is needed most.

“Our AI models are built with transparency and human oversight to ensure that we are able to mitigate bias and unintended consequences to a large degree. That is why innovation must be pursued with responsibility,” Williams insists.

“We thrive on building strategic partnerships.”

With a firm commitment to developing and deploying AI solutions in ways that are accountable, inclusive and safe, Microsoft is driving forward innovation by continuing to make investments in its partnership with governments, academia and customers.

“Ultimately, our mission in Nigeria is to harness the power of AI so that we can empower every Nigerian, enable inclusive growth and foster responsible innovation and use of technology for the greater good,” Williams concludes.

Williams has now left her post as General Manager at Microsoft Nigeria and has assumed a regional role as Chief Growth & AI Officer for Microsoft Middle East and Africa Growth Markets.
