Innovations in the healthcare space aren’t always a matter of what’s been achieved, but rather where. Access to advanced healthcare technology should be universal, but that isn’t always the case. When people have to travel long distances to receive a particular treatment, the wait time can very much be a matter of life and death.
For leading integrated healthcare provider Icon Group, that simply wasn’t good enough. With a footprint spanning the globe from Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia to the United Kingdom, the Group is able to provide world-class medical care when and where it’s needed.
“At Icon Group, we believe access to high-quality healthcare shouldn’t depend on geography, circumstance or background,” says CEO Mark Middleton OAM, whose work has earned him the title of Healthcare Executive of the Year and Runner-Up CEO of the Year at The CEO Magazine’s 2025 Executive of the Year Awards.
Established in 2015, Icon Group has shot to the top of the healthcare sector, thanks to the impressive assemblage of industry talent within, as well as strong partnerships with professionals and peak bodies. Today, the Group provides comprehensive cancer care – from radiation oncology, hematology and medical oncology to pharmacy, compounding and research – as part of a truly seamless, end-to-end service package for cancer patients all over the world.
“I’m incredibly proud of the contribution Icon has made to cancer care,” Middleton says.
“Over the past year alone, we’ve welcomed and announced 12 new centers across our pharmacy, cancer care and compounding services; supported more than four million patient interactions in Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia and the United Kingdom; and invested in and introduced cutting-edge cancer treatment technologies to deliver faster, highly precise and personalized patient care.”
In recent years, the global healthcare sector has embarked on an odyssey of rapid transformation. Rising demand and increasing pressure on workforce capacity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic has raised the temperature from a simmer to boiling point. Icon Group has responded to this with innovation, technology and a commitment to care equity.
“One of our key initiatives is the Global Agile Radiation Therapy tool, which connects over 45 cancer centers across Australia and Singapore,” Middleton explains.
“This platform enables dynamic redistribution of clinical workloads based on availability and urgency. This enhances efficiency, reduces operating costs and shortens time to treatment for patients.”
“It’s always been a passion of mine to make a real, tangible difference in people’s lives.”
As Icon Group’s network grows, so does the tool’s impact, allowing it to leverage more staff across more sites and deliver care closer to home, thereby delivering on its original promise.
The Group has also made the most of its Australian-made innovations by making them available worldwide.
“We have a borderless workforce model for remote radiation therapy planning,” Middleton reveals.
“Our centralized team in Australia delivers complex treatment plans anywhere in the world, finalizing them 66 percent faster than traditional onsite workflows.”
This model has supported care delivery in regions facing workforce shortages, and takes a ‘follow the sun’ approach.
“Overnight planning in Australia is available for same-day review in the United Kingdom, ensuring timely access to round-the-clock care,” he says.
A radiation therapist by trade, Middleton brings clinical experience to the top job. His time on the front line has imbued him with an innate understanding of the challenges facing everyone affected by cancer – on both sides of treatment.
“No-one should face cancer alone,” he says. “There’s no single fix for the global cancer burden – it’s complex and it requires all of us working together across disciplines, borders and systems.”
Middleton’s role as Icon Group CEO allows him to do all that and more.
“It’s always been a passion of mine to make a real, tangible difference in people’s lives, and that’s exactly what I love most about my role,” he says.
“Every day I get to work alongside an incredible team, contributing to something that has impact not just locally, but globally.”
“My hope is that access to cancer care becomes a certainty.”
Icon Group’s values – connect, energy, innovate, nurture and on-purpose – are an extension of Middleton’s passion, and shape every interaction and decision made across the organization’s growing global network. The team is motivated by the very same passion and it brings them together in a way that feels like a family.
“Regardless of their role, region or service, our people create a genuine difference in our patients’ lives,” he says. “That motivation is key to the quality of our care and our success.”
That success is a cause for celebration within the Group, which goes to the nth degree to recognize the very important work being done by its people.
“That’s a big part of who we are,” Middleton confirms. “One of the highlights is Be Iconic Day, an annual celebration of community, gratitude and pride. Across all our sites, teams come together for local gatherings, gift-sharing and a global social media campaign that really brings our culture to life and celebrates the incredible work of our people.”
There’s also the Iconic Awards, which recognize outstanding contributions from across the company and shine a light on work that might otherwise go unnoticed.
“It’s our way of saying thank you and making sure our people feel seen, valued and proud to be a part of Icon,” he reveals.
Now, that recognition has been amplified at The CEO Magazine’s Executive of the Year Awards. The win reflects not only his hard work, but also that of his team.
“As a leader, I genuinely respect the skills and individuality of my team,” he says. “I work hard to support them in ways that align with their goals and strengths.
“But I also believe in pushing boundaries, setting high standards and encouraging people to stretch beyond what they thought was possible.”
Finding that balance is, he adds, the art of leadership.
“The real impact comes when you can create an environment where people feel supported and inspired, while also being driven to grow, evolve and contribute to something bigger than themselves.”
“Our goal is to help shape a future where cancer care is accessible and sustainable, and where no-one faces it alone.”
Middleton cites his mentorship by Chief of Mission and Head of Research for Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Jeff Dunn AM, as his leadership inspiration.
“One of the things Jeff taught me, not through a single quote but through his actions and approach, is the importance of leading with purpose and taking Australian expertise to the world,” he reflects.
“His ability to find solutions to complex challenges, advocate for change and elevate others around him has shaped how I lead. And he has shown me what it means to turn vision into impact.”
As Middleton and his team continue to do exactly that, the CEO believes his goals are achievable.
“My hope is that access to cancer care becomes a certainty, not something defined by geography, circumstance or background,” he says.
“At Icon Group, we’re focused on expanding access through integrated care models, public–private partnerships and emerging technologies. In some regions, these partnerships have reduced time from diagnosis to treatment by up to 25 percent.”
Icon Group is also addressing ESG and equity through its work; the company has already achieved a 49 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and introduced electric vehicles for compounding deliveries, all while supporting culturally safe care for Indigenous communities and training nurse navigators in low and middle-income countries.
Middleton says his role’s combination of purpose and people is incredibly rewarding; a silver lining in the never-ending battle against cancer.
“Ultimately, our goal is to help shape a future where cancer care is accessible and sustainable, and where no-one faces it alone.”
