Turning waste into opportunity

Few companies can say their research has resulted in a world-first achievement. But Macawber Beekay, a leading Indian provider of ash handling solutions throughout the power industry, is one business where investment in innovation, development and engineering has paid off.

“We are the only company in the country to have innovated, developed and patented a waste-to-green-coal manufacturing technology on a commercial scale,” says Gautam Gupta, Joint Managing Director.

Such a breakthrough did not happen overnight. It was the result of rigorous and continuous effort, and countless hours spent by Macawber Beekay’s engineers refining and validating the technology before it was implemented.

“Our teams worked tirelessly day in and day out to develop the technology. Today, we have four waste-to-green-coal plants in our green energy portfolio, one of which is already in commercial operation in Varanasi,” he says.

Following established paths was clearly not going to create cutting-edge technology, but as industry leaders, Gupta and his team realized that moving away from the status quo was the only way forward.

“Failure was not an option,” Gupta adds.

In the process of developing waste-to-green-coal facilities, Macawber Beekay had to create frameworks and benchmarks that simply didn’t exist and then prove to regulators and customers that the technology was effective.

“Such a reference never existed, such a project was never done,” he points out.

With a focus on expanding the company’s manufacturing footprint, strengthening its defense projects and advancing next-generation waste conversion technologies, Gupta is pairing innovation with scale.

“Our manufacturing footprint has expanded from 44,000 square meters to around 94,000 square meters,” he says.

This expansion supports his broader ambitions within green energy, sustainability and industrial infrastructure.

“We definitely want to increase our foothold in the green energy space because the green energy space is massive,” he says.

National interest

As India works to strengthen domestic defense manufacturing, Gupta believes Macawber Beekay is well positioned to support national priorities.

“We successfully entered the defense industry and became an approved supplier,” he says.

By supplying critical equipment to the Indian Navy, the company has demonstrated its ability to deliver high-value and precision engineering projects. Macawber Beekay is also well positioned in the hydrogen space.

“It’s a very green and future-facing fuel. We have successfully manufactured and tested our own hydrogen electrolyzer, which has been shipped to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited,” he says, illustrating the rapid growth of hydrogen-related work at the company.

While engineering remains central to Macawber Beekay’s identity, Gupta sees the company as more than a traditional engineering business.

Its approach is to move beyond conventional solutions, combining technical expertise with original thinking to engineer differently and address emerging opportunities through constant innovation.

While engineers focus on the products, Gupta uses his financial experience gained through his MBA to turn those products into commercially viable solutions.

“My role requires me to stay closely connected with every aspect of the business, providing direction across various functions while remaining hands-on where it matters. Marketing and business promotions are also key priorities, as they help shape the company’s growth and future opportunities,” he explains.

Many of the company’s initiatives, including the hydrogen project, have sustainability at their core. Instead of viewing sustainability as a mere regulatory requirement, Gupta has embedded green initiatives across the business.

“Sustainability is one area that was very important for us to tap into, and what the world and the country want today are sustainable solutions and green solutions,” he adds.

Partnership power

For Gupta, working with partners goes far beyond just one-off transactions.

“We value our supply chain relationships, they are extremely critical. Without them, we are in a silo and we can’t perform,” he says.

Macawber Beekay’s collaborative approach toward partners sees the firm add value by studying its suppliers’ quality processes and offering suggestions that can enhance output. It’s perhaps for this reason that many supplier relationships have lasted for decades, built on trust and reliability.

“We’ve been able to push the limits and have products delivered and engineered for us on time or sometimes even ahead of time,” he reveals.

Having helped transform Macawber Beekay from a traditional engineering company into a diversified technology and sustainability business, Gupta now has his sights set on tackling some of the country’s most pressing industrial and environmental challenges.

“We have to constantly keep a watch on what the nation demands and keep applying those innovations to what we do,” he concludes.
