When Daniel Tan took over a small dental practice in Launceston more than a decade ago, he saw an opportunity to do more than deliver great smiles. He imagined a space where oral health would connect with whole-body wellbeing – where the science of dentistry could coexist with the art of longevity.
That vision became the foundation for Dr Daniel Tan & Associates (DDTA), with Tan as the Founder and Director of the award-winning practice now regarded as a leader in integrative and bioregulatory dentistry. This has earned him a finalist spot in the Healthcare category at The CEO Magazine’s Executive of the Year Awards.
“I’m most proud that since its inception, DDTA has consistently delivered on its value of continuous improvement,” Tan tells The CEO Magazine.
“A long-term vision to set a new benchmark for holistic care in Australia has guided every stage of our business development, with real outcomes for our patients’ wellbeing and truly transformative patient experiences remaining central to our growth and success.”
While many dental practices focus narrowly on oral treatment, DDTA has expanded to encompass the broader principles of biological dentistry and bio-regulatory medicine.
“As a multi-specialty integrative dental practice based on the principles of bioregulatory medicine and biological dentistry, we consider DDTA to be part of an industry that goes beyond traditional dentistry, extending to holistic health and wellbeing,” Tan explains.
This philosophy has driven a strong commitment to innovation and research.
“We have invested progressively larger portions of our annual budget towards innovation, research and development, particularly in the realm of dental technology and wellness solutions,” he says.
“These strategic investments ensure that we not only improve our service offerings, but also continue to position our practice as a leader in the health and wellbeing space.”
So far, the commitment has resulted in a US$1.94 million renovation and expansion of the Launceston practice, doubling its size and adding cutting-edge capabilities.
“The completion of our renovation and expansion has been critical to our success, particularly through the incorporation of additional treatment rooms and improvements to our on-site laboratory,” Tan confirms.
“A long-term vision to set a new benchmark for holistic care in Australia has guided every stage of our business development.”
The expansion has also allowed DDTA to introduce longevity-focused modalities rarely found in a dental environment.
“Our response to industry trends and changes – with which we wholeheartedly align – has included providing a tailored approach to patient care through personalized plans that incorporate dental treatment alongside other modalities,” he says.
Among these modalities are full-body red light therapy, intermittent hypoxic-hyperoxic therapy and mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy – each designed to complement dental and overall wellness outcomes.
“Full-body red light therapy uses low levels of red light, which can promote healing, improve muscle performance, reduce inflammation, support cellular repair and improve general health,” Tan explains.
“Intermittent hypoxic-hyperoxic therapy mimics aspects of high-altitude training by alternating intervals of breathing low-oxygenated air with intervals of breathing oxygen-enriched air, to enhance athletic performance, recovery and physiological adaptation.
“By increasing air pressure to 1.35 times greater than normal, the hyperbaric oxygen chamber increases oxygen supply, helping to accelerate sport and injury recovery, boost energy levels, improve cognition and sleep quality, provide nervous system support, increase circulation and support skincare and anti-aging.”
While technology plays an integral role in DDTA’s ongoing success, Tan is quick to point out that it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Building a united, values-driven team has been equally vital.
“My growing team of highly knowledgeable practitioners now include dentists, oral health therapists, a medical doctor, registered nurse and Ayurvedic practitioner,” he says, proudly.
“While each team member brings their unique expertise and experience to DDTA’s integrative approach to patient care, our organizational culture engenders a shared vision toward patient care, innovation and teamwork.”
Unsurprisingly, this means recruitment at DDTA centers on cultural fit as much as clinical skill.
“The journey to creating and maintaining a truly exceptional practice culture begins with the attraction and retention of the best talent,” he explains.
“Our core practice values are only as good as those who uphold them, so I seek to engage like-minded individuals with similar values and commitments.”
“We have created a practice that not only performs at a very high level but also continues to grow sustainably.”
This intentional approach has created a team that thrives on collaboration and purpose.
“It has directly contributed to our success by fostering a cohesive, motivated team that consistently delivers exceptional patient outcomes, drives innovation in treatment options and ensures high levels of patient satisfaction and loyalty,” Tan acknowledges.
“By aligning our people with our values, we have created a practice that not only performs at a very high level but also continues to grow sustainably.”
Tan’s leadership approach mirrors his holistic approach. It’s thoughtful, transparent and deeply human.
“As someone who aligns most closely with a transformational leadership style, I believe that exceptional leaders share the qualities of being aspirational and inspirational, acting as a role model and motivator toward a shared vision,” he reveals.
“An exceptional leader also recognizes, considers and adapts to individual team member working styles and temperaments and demonstrates self-awareness, humility and authenticity.”
Tan makes a conscious effort to keep communication open and purposeful.
“I prioritize open communication and place a high value on building healthy team dynamics through regular social activities, celebrating our successes and ongoing learning and development,” he explains.
One piece of advice, he says, has stayed with him throughout his entire career – the focus on the ‘why’ behind every action.
“This advice has proven itself time and again to be successful in inspiring my teams and creating a sense of common purpose, driving engagement, commitment and fulfillment.”
“Giving back is close to my heart.”
Tan brings a values-led approach to both life and business, with a focus on giving back and making a meaningful impact.
“My personal core values of philanthropy, generosity and human connection underpin a purpose-driven approach to business and life more generally,” he says.
“Giving back is close to my heart. Along with my wife and fellow business director Natalie and our two children, I regularly provide charitable services to orphanages, including visiting and volunteering at key services around the world.”
He says this global perspective helps to inform DDTA’s social impact initiatives.
“As a business, my team and I are currently developing a dental program that will support local communities in third world countries, delivering educational initiatives to raise awareness of and support oral hygiene practices,” Tan explains.
The practice also partners with Tasmanian charity Care for Africa, which helps rural communities in Tanzania.
“This year, I’m working toward a primary goal of delivering a breakfast program to provide nutritious morning meals to children in these communities, with a vision to help enhance their concentration, school attendance and overall wellbeing,” he says.
Closer to home, DDTA continues to raise awareness of oral and holistic health through local outreach.
“We work hard to improve public health by developing and delivering clear marketing strategies that invite our local community to experience our holistic health offering,” Tan adds.
As dentistry continues to evolve, Tan hopes more leaders will embrace empathy, ethics and purpose as core business drivers.
“As someone who models and often advocates for businesses to lead with purpose and to create environments where people feel safe and valued, I hope that our industry will further develop its commitment to prioritizing human connection and ethical leadership,” he says.
“My own personal and business success is a real-time reflection of the benefits of this approach in engendering innovation and resilience in individuals and across organizations.”
For Tan, fulfillment comes from seeing the ripple effect of that philosophy on both people and practice.
“The opportunity to see the impact of my work and leadership style on my team and the company as a whole is powerful,” he reflects.
“I find joy in helping others – employees, peers and patients – discover their purpose, and then to be able to walk alongside them as that clarity transforms their own approach to life.”
