The new jobs and economic opportunities being created at PVD, located just south of Boston in a catchment area of 7.5 million residents, are proof positive that when businesses come to Rhode Island, they know that the Governor, General Assembly, Rhode Island Commerce, and all in the Congressional delegation are pulling in the same direction to help the state’s businesses succeed.

Strong partnerships

Thanks to the partnership with the State of Rhode Island, Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport has reversed past trends and is now adding thousands of new passengers and new nonstop routes, with even more in the future. PVD’s renaissance of increasing connections between Southern New England and the rest of the nation and world has played a vital role in helping the state’s tourism and hospitality economy not just recover but thrive following the COVID-19 pandemic.

For its part, the Rhode Island Airport Corporation has made the airport the most competitive in the region, with the lowest cost per enplanement and rising demand for new destinations gaining the attention of airlines such as Southwest and JetBlue. These airlines are adding new destinations, such as Dallas and Denver, and new daily service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a total of 39 nonstop routes now available from PVD.

An airline hub

Meanwhile, the recent news that Breeze Airways plans to make Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport their airline hub, with up to a dozen aircraft based at PVD and a total of 35 nonstop routes at the airport, will result in the creation of hundreds of new jobs and new opportunities for international travel over the coming years. Breeze Airways already bases eight aircraft at PVD, and with the planned expansion, Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport is expected to welcome one million additional passengers.

Breeze Airways’ expansion in Rhode Island truly showcases how Rhode Island’s leadership is helping to transform our state economy, and none of it would have been possible without Governor McKee’s foresight and the support of the General Assembly. Thanks to the state’s leadership, in three years PVD has grown nonstop destinations by 38 percent, and as a growing hub for Breeze Airways, the airport expects to welcome an additional one million passengers, helping Rhode Island’s hospitality economy grow.

Collectively, we are truly taking our airport and regional economy to new heights as nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut residents discover the ease, affordability and enjoyment of choosing our airport. Indeed, this past year has been one of remarkable achievements for the airport and its airline partners, including PVD’s selection as one of Conde Nast Traveller’s ‘Best Airports in the World’.

These accomplishments and accolades give Rhode Island the attention it deserves, as both a destination for visitors and an active intermodal transit hub for the regional economy and reaffirms the importance of the state’s vital mission to provide the region with global connections.
