A Strategic Partnership for Upgrading Tank Terminals

LBC has set its objective to have the safest and most efficient tank terminals. In Rotterdam, this objective shall be realised in the Rainbow multi-year program, in which the existing facilities will be replaced and expanded. Iv-Industrie has been working on several projects within the Rainbow program, such as Rainbow phase two and three, and is currently also working on another project at the LBC Antwerp site.

Rainbow phase two includes a storage capacity expansion of 68,870 cubic metres in 18 tanks, divided over two tank pits. The chemicals are delivered by seagoing and inland-waterway tankers, stored, and again pumped back to the tankers and trucks with state-of-the-art (technical) solutions. Iv-Industrie, commissioned by LBC, was responsible for the design and detail engineering, including delivery of the process design, the design of the pipe bridges and the piping calculations. The piping and mechanical design was performed by Iv-Offshore & Energy, including the document control.

Safe and Efficient

The Rainbow’s phase two design supplied by Iv-Industrie ensures that LBC Rotterdam is equipped for its ambition to be the safest and most efficient tank terminal. To reach this, both LBC and Iv-Industrie invested in ‘thinking in systems’ to optimally set up and utilise software tools: all parts, valves, equipment and instruments are related to systems. These systems are the building blocks the engineering and execution disciplines use to structure and ease their work: from process diagrams through piping up to process instrumentation and automation. Through this investment, LBC and Iv-Industrie built a strategic partnership that goes far beyond a durable relation.

Both LBC and Iv-Industrie experience the benefit of the development of expertise in AVEVA Diagrams. The elements set up in Rainbow phase two are being used in the design and engineering of the project Rainbow phase three, resulting in a full concept design of three tank pits in only one month. At the LBC site Leon Bonnetweg in Antwerp, two new tank pits are projected. Here the advantage of the AVEVA Diagrams philosophy is traceability in the quick development of the piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID’s), and the availability of data for all disciplines involved. It is clear that the benefits are not limited to new buildings – when working on modifications, the efficiency and data consistency is also demonstrated, resulting in clear void, demolition and modification documentation.

AVEVA Diagrams

Intelligent process diagrams have been applied in the design process. In a short period, Iv-Industrie successfully set up the application AVEVA Diagrams and used it for all diagrams. There are multiple advantages to applying AVEVA Diagrams: the information on the process diagrams is directly linked to the associated lists, such as the piping list and instrument list. The lists are therefore error-free and much work in the form of verification is eliminated. Besides this, a primary validation for the information on the process diagrams and in the 3D piping model, which is set up in PDMS, also takes place. Here too the differences between the diagrams and the model are immediately visible and corrected.

Applying AVEVA Diagrams has an additional advantage: diagrams can be easily copied where parts of an installation occur repeatedly. The database behind AVEVA ensures that identification numbers on the diagrams during copying always remain unique and therefore error-free. The database can be transferred to contractors that, for example, are to execute the piping, the instrumentation or provide the automation. For LBC, the availability of the AVEVA database serves as the basis for setting up maintenance management: equipment data, pipes, fittings and instruments can be directly linked with manuals, spare parts and planning schedules.
